E. T. A. Hoffmann The Nutcracker and the Mouse-King

First published in German in 1816, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse-King” is the children’s fairy tale by Prussian composer and romantic author E. T. A. Hoffman that inspired Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet. Popularized by a French retelling by Alexandre Dumas in 1844 and immortalized in 1892 in the ballet that has become a part of the Christmas season tradition, Hoffman’s original tale is a magical story of imagination and love. It begins on Christmas Eve as the young Marie and her brother Fritz receive their Christmas gifts, including a beautiful nutcracker that immediately catches Marie’s interest. She begins to have fantastical dreams of her brave nutcracker leading all of her dolls in battle against the cruel and greedy Mouse-King and his army of mice. Her parents do not believe her dreams are real, but Marie is certain that the nutcracker is indeed her magical hero. She continues to dream of dramatic battles, the nutcracker’s eventual victory over the wicked Mouse-King, and a trip to the beautiful Land of Toys. Hoffman’s fairy tale of magic and devotion continues to captivate audiences and inspire adaptations around the world.

E. T. A. Hoffmann The Best Tales of Hoffmann

E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) was perhaps one of the two or three greatest of all writers of fantasy. His wonderful tales, translated into many languages and adapted into numerous stage works, have delighted readers for a century and a half. They open our eyes to an extraordinary world of fantasy, poetry, and the supernatural. Remarkable characters come vividly to life. With exciting speed, Hoffmann moves from the firm ground of reality to ambiguity, mystery, and romance. His imaginativeness is unsurpassed, and his handling of allegory, symbolism, and mysticism is unusually skillful. These qualities make his tales some of the most stimulating and enjoyable in the world's literature. They can be read on many levels of enjoyment; as exciting fiction brilliantly told, as a fascinating statement of many of the major concerns of the Romantic era, and as a culmination of German Romantic literature. This collection contains ten of his best tales: «The Golden Flower Pot,» «Automata,» «A New Year's Eve Adventure,» «Nutcracker and the King of Mice,» «The Sand-Man,» «Rath Krespel,» «Tobias Martin, Master Cooper, and His Men,» «The Mines of Falun,» «Signor Formica,» and «The King's Betrothed.»

E. T. A. Hoffmann Weird Tales (Volumes I and II)

Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffman, (the A in his pen name stands for Amadeus, out of admiration for Mozart), was one of the most influential German writers in his time. He is credited with instigating the Romantic movement, creating the first detective story, introducing themes of the supernatural and psychological abnormality to the literary world, and inspiring many eminent writers and composers. Tchaikovsky's ballet «The Nutcracker» is based on his «Nutcracker and Mouse King». Hoffmann had a taste for the macabre, lending to tales that interweave fantasy with realism. This collection of stories, his «Weird Tales», includes «Mademoiselle de Scudéri,» the story of an illusive master goldsmith who will go to violent lengths to not be parted from his creations; «Signor Formica,» the hilarious tale of the famous Italian artist Salvator Rosa and his assistance in the marriage of two friends; «The Sand-man» and many others. All told this edition brings together the eleven tales contained in volumes one and two of Hoffmann's «Weird Tales».

Hoffmann E. The Sandman. The Elementary Spirit

No literature can produce a more original writer than Ernst Thcodor Wilhelm Hoffmann (1776-1822), a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror, better known by his pen name E. T. A. Hoffmann (Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann). His works are very numerous and were published at Berlin in fifteen volumes. He is the subject and hero of Jacques Offenbach's famous but fictional opera The Tales of Hoffmann. .Of the two tales in this book, The Sandman is from the collection "Night Pieces," and The Elementary Spirit is from his "Later Works." In these stories, Hoffmanns purpose is to point out the ill-effect of a morbid desire after an imaginary world, and a distaste for realities. Different as their adventures are, there is a striking similarity in the characters of Nathaniel (in The Sandman) and Victor (in The Elementary Spirit). However wild may be the subjects of Hoffmann, and however rambling his method of treating them, his style is remarkably lucid. .The story of the Sandman had its origin in a discussion which actually took place between La Motte Fouque (a German writer of the romantic movement, 1777-1843) and some friends, at which Hoffmann was present. Some of the party found fault with the cold, mechanical deportment of a young lady of their acquaintance, while La Motte Fouque zealously defended her. Here Hoffmann caught the notion of the automaton Olympia, and the arguments used by Nathaniel are those that were employed by La Motte Fouque. .
